Day 5

Today we woke and went to Geprge Washington's House at Mount Vernon. It was raining a ton but we walked through his house and went to his grave sight along with Marsha's and his children. We saw the ha ha wall and we went inside the museum where we learned more about George Washington's life. Here we learned that any guests that came were always welcome and they often would stay for long period's of time. Sometimes eleven months sometimes two years. Their house was always full of guests and they were very seldom alone. MArsha Washington was a widow and had two children when George met her. They married and never had any children of their own. They were happy though and really loved each other alot. George Washington died of a throat infection. Martha died two years later.

After we were drenched so we got in the bus and went to the Pentagon memorial. Here we saw where the plane crashed into the pentagon and we saw the memorials for each person that died. This is another example of the Holocaust and Sadam Hussein have hatred for other people and how we need to fight against it in our world. Here we learned that children your age were killed. They were flying on the plane that was hijacked. This was a scarey place to be right before we were to fly to SLC. From here we rode the subway and went to the airport. In the airport we boarded the plane flew to chicago and then to SLC. It was a trip well worht seeing and going on. We Thank all of the parents and Ms. Heather and Ms. Sarah for letting us come!!!

Day 4

We started off the day with breakfast in the Hotel and headed over to Arlington National Cemetery. Here those who had died in war were burried. Families have the right to burry them here or with the family. The families were given the opportunity to decide. Here we also saw the memorials for those who rode on the space ship columbia and the spaceship challenger. We also saw John F kenedy's grave and learned of his assasination. We also learned that his brother was assasinated too after running for office of president. We saw the Eternal Flame at Kenedy's grave and walked to the place where we saw the changing of the gaurd. We were lucky this day because we actually got to witness an actual funeral that was taking place. The daughter of the soldier killed walked with and performed the changing of the gaurd with the soldiers. This was sad but we were glad to be able to be there an honor that soldier. The graves were all white and placed perfectly in rows and diagnols. It was a very peaceful place and I was proud of the lives that were lived. Each one of these soldiers stood for something in their life. They had courage and a desire to protect our country. They gave their life for that cause.

After lunch we went to tour the Capitol. By the side of the Capitol were the House of Representative buildings. There were at least five buildings. Inside the Capitol were amazing Chandleirs and beautiful paintings. We walked down the actual steps that Obama walked when he was Inagurated and took his Presidential Oath. From here we stopped at the Library of Congress and then went to dinner.

After dinner came my favorite part of the day. We went to the Einstein Memorial and the students were all aloud to climb on Einstein and we took pictures of the class. From here we went to the Vietnam Wall memorial and the wemon's war memorial. At the wall the students go the opportunity to feel the names of the people tha twere killed. A cross next to the person's name meant that they were never found in war. A dash means that their bodies were sent home. This was a very solumn time. We saw the letters next to the wall and the flowers left for those who had passed on. We walked over and saw the Korean War memorial and saw the faces of the soldiers on the wall. We also saw the look of fear and determination in the soldiers faces. Many people lost their lives in these two wars.

From here we walked over to the Lincoln Memorial and learned about Abraham Lincoln. When he first started as President he was not to concerned with people owning slaves. In his Presidency his mind was changed and he stood up for what he learned and grew to believe. He was the President at the time of the Civil War when there was hatred against the blacks. He fought and stood up for the North. The North and South were against each other and it was under his Presidency that black's were liberated and slavery was ended. Here on the steps of his memorial Martin Luther King Jr. also gave his famous speech, I Have a Dream. We got to stand on the spot where he gave his speech and several students quoted his words. We sat on the steps and looked at the view of the Washington Monument. The sun went down we got on our bus and went home for the night. When we returned everyone went swimming and soaked their tired feet and minds in the hot tub.

Day 3

We started to day going to breakfast in the hotel. After Breakfast we went to the bus to travel to the White House for a group picture outside. When we were there Obama was in the West Wing in an actual meeting. There were tons of people outside and we learned that when you are apart of the Presidents family you are never alone. In their front yard were hundreds of people taking pictures. Imagine never being able to go outside and play unprotected. There were gaurds all around and there was a sniper on the roof. This was Dillions favorite part. Next we walked by the Washington Monument and took pictures. This was a memorial to George Washington to honor his life. We were amazed at how tall it stood.

Our next stop was the Holocaust museum. Here we walked through the museum and learned about a boy named Daniel. We watched his life story and learned about how he survived the Holocaust and the Nazi's in Germany. He lived in a consentration camp and his mother and sister were killed. His father died of sickness. We walked through a museum that showed us what it was like where he lived and what he went through. He was kicked out of the swimming pool and he was forced to live in the slums and eventually taken to a concentration camp. Here he had to live and learn to survive until he was liberated by the Russians. We walked through a similation of the place where he was kept. We saw the bob wire fences and the gaurds that kept them there. We read about the sickness and in the end we were able to write Daniel a letter. Then place it in a mailbox and later it would be published on the wall. We also walked through Germany and learned about the Propoganda that Hitler fed the people in order to get them to believe and follow him. They were told alot of lies about the Jews and they were led to believe alot of things that were not true. There actions were results of fear and lies that were fed to them by Hitler, a person whom they trusted. It was a horrible situation all around. There was a quote on the outside of the building that said that those who remain nuetral when millions of people are being killed will ensure their way into the deepest Dungeons of Evil. This has happened in History many many times. One example is with Sadam Hussein today. We must watch and fight against this terrible evil. This experience was a hard one to see but made us all aware that evil does exist and we have a responsibility to do good and fight against crimes like this.

After we saw the Holocaust museum we ran over to the World War two memorial and took a picture underneath the Utah wreath. We saw the stars that represented over 100 people killed per star. We walked around and learned of the people killed and what they stood for. We walked back and met up with our group. It was alot to take in in one morning. After this we went to lunch.

The next part of the day was spent in line waiting to go inside the National Archives Building where we were able to go inside and see the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution and the Bill of Rights. We also saw the The Magna Charter. All of these were the original documents and no flash photography is allowed inside. There were alot of gaurds there protceting these documents. We went inside the gift shop there and everyone bought a copy of the Declaration of Independence. This whole process took us a while and so then we went to dinner.

After dinner we walked through a memorial of waterfalls for Franklin D Roosevelt. This memorial gave alot of quotes that he said. We stopped and read all of them. They talked about the horrors of war and how he was against it and he wanted to find peace with other nations. He was the Presdient that decided to join in World War two though adn stop the war. In doing this he was the one who ordered the atomic bomb dropped on Japan after they attacked us at Pearl Harbor.

From here we went to a memorial for Thomas Jefferson. We read on the walls the quotes he gave. His favorite thing to be remebered for was writing the Declaration of Independence, not that he was a President. From here it was 11:30 at night and so we went home to bed.

Day 2 - Day 5

Well due to a lack of Internet at the Hotel the postings did not continue. But I will update this about our trip so you will still be able to read about it now.

Day 2

Today we woke up and went to Williamsburg. In Williams burg we walked through the town as if it were what it was back in the time it first bagan. We saw the capitol, the govener's palace,
the spot where Patrick Henery made his speech, the jail, the wig shop and last the court house where they made and passed the laws. We sat down and had a mock trial and we went to the gallows where they were punished. We had a fiddler player play us a song and give us an example of what it would be like to dance back in the day. After Williamsburg we went to eat and then we went to Jamestown where we ran into one of our very own class mates Cooper. His mom was with him and they were touring Jamestown as well. In Jamestown we had the opportunity to learn more about the Indians that lived at this time. We learned about the African Americans in this time and we learned about the people who settled the Jamestown colony. We walked on a model of a ship that they would have come over on. We saw the place where they stayed. We learned that out of 138 that took the trip only 35 survived the journey. They were only able to eat hard cracker cookies and to use the rest room they had a bowl and there was no privacy. Everyone had a job and thanks to the Indians they actually survived. They used tools carved out of wood and made their clothes from animal hide. Their houses had only what they needed to survive. They were made of sticks and animal skins. Every person had a job even three year olds. The fire inside the home had to be constantly going for the smoke to perserve the food. Their life expectancy was very young around 45 to 50. Only three percent of children survived to adulthood. We walked through their houses and their village. It was a very neat experience to see how they lived and the trials they had to over come. After this experience we went to eat and by bus we traveled back to Washington DC where we would finish out the rest of our trip.

Day 1 - The learning and fun begins!!

We left at 3:30 and arrived at the air port at 4:45. The students showed up and we said our good byes and boarded the plane. We had a layover in Chicago and arrived at 2:30 in DC. We went right away to The Museum Of Natural History. Here we learned alot about prehistoric life and evolution. We saw lots of fossils and replica's of prehistoric life and bones. We saw human life, ocean life, mammal life, ice age life, plant life, insect life all in fossil form. We noticed that several species while evolving over time became smaller and more refined and other species becamse bigger. We wondered what would cause some species to enlarge and others to die out or become smaller. We will have the opportunity to go back there on Saturday. After the Museum we had a 4 hour bus ride to williamsburg, part due to traffic. Here we found our hotel and ate dinner on the bus. Tomorrow we will learn all about colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown.
